Viton was introduced in 1957 as a high-performance aerospace sealing elastomer. It is now also used in other industries including automotive, fluid power, appliance, and chemical industries.
It is noted for its outstanding performance in very hot and extremely corrosive environments. Compounds of Viton remain elastic indefinitely at 204°C or when exposed intermittently to 260°C under laboratory conditions. Viton is generally serviceable down to -18 to -23°C, although special formulations permit static use down to -54°C (-65°F).
Also, Viton has proven to be satisfactory for static seals under conditions approaching absolute zero. Viton has excellent resistance to oils, fuels, lubricants, and most mineral acids. It has extremely low permeability to a broad range of substances. It is resistant to aliphatic, aromatic hydrocarbons. It is extremely resistant to compression set, even at high temperatures. It has exceptional good resistance to atmospheric oxidation, sun, weather, fungus, and mold. It has good electrical properties in low voltage, low frequency applications and low burning characteristics.
Viton F-605C fluoroelastomer is a new generation incorporated cure "F-family" terpolymer designed for compression and transfer molding of seals, gaskets, and O-rings that require excellent fluids resistance to today's automotive fuels. In addition to the heat and chemical resistance characteristics typical of Viton fluoroelastomers, Viton F-605C offers significant improvements in processing, rheology, and physical properties.
Compared with Viton F-601C,Viton F-605C provides:
• Improved processing
- Increased mold flow
- Improved mold release
- Less mold fouling
• Improved extrusion performance
• Excellent compression set resistance
• Similar fluids and permeation resistance to automotive fuels
Viton F-605C is recommended for sealing applications, such as fuel systems that require improved fluids and permeation resistance to fuels (especially oxygenated and "sour" fuels). Also for compression/transfer molding of O-rings, gaskets, and diaphragms requiring excellent chemical resistance.
Viton F-601C is Bisphenol curative-containing precompound.
Highest fluids resistance, excellent mold release characteristics
Temperature of Retraction (TR-10): -7°C. Polymer Fluorine Content: 69.5%.
Volume Increase After 7 Days/Methanol/23°C: 5 to 10%
Viton Type F Information: Comprised of vinylidene fluoride (VF2), hexafluoroproylene (HFP) and tetrafluoroethylene (TFE). Highest fluorine content of Viton standard grades leads to highest chemical resistance and lowest flexibility at low temperatures.
Viton VTR-9209 is a precompound containing an improved 69% fluorine "B-type" fluoroelastomer. This precompound incorporates a bisphenol cure system that can be optionally compounded with peroxide and coagent for "dual curing." Viton VTR-9209 offers a unique combination of processing and cured characteristics including:
• Smooth extrudate surface and appearance at thickness less than 1.0 mm (0.040 in)
• Excellent "green" strength that helps maintain extrudate shape, as well as enabling draw down to very thin veneer thicknesses
• Excellent fuel permeation resistance
• Good tensile strength
• Good adhesion to other elastomers in multilayer hoses
Viton VTR-9209 is especially attractive for use in the manufacture of low permeation fuel and filler neck hose for automotive and small engine applications. It also works well for any hose requiring a thin FKM layer. This product is superior in extrusion processability, compared to many other types of Viton, including Viton B-202 and B-600 blends.
Viton VTR-9217 is a developmental precompound based on a recently developed 69% fluorine "B-type"fluoroelastomer (FKM). This precompound incorporates a bisphenol cure system that can be optionally compounded with peroxide and coagent for "dual curing." Superior thin extrusions for fuel and filler neck hose can be achieved. VTR-9217 has a unique combination of processing and cure characteristics, including:
• Smooth extrudate surface, and appearance at thickness below 0.040 in or 1.0 mm
• Excellent "green" strength that helps maintain extrudate shape,as well as enables drawdown to a thickness of 0.008" or 0.2 mm
• Lower viscosity, lower hardness, and better compression set than VTR-9209, the first generation precompound based on the same gum polymer
• Good fuel permeation resistance for a "B-type" FKM
• Compounds show good adhesion and physical properties
Automotive and small engine applications utilizing low permeation fuel and filler neck hose and tubing are expected to find this product most attractive as an affordable material. Chemours has found this product to be superior in extrusion processability compared to Viton B-202 and B-600 blends.
FLUOROELASTOMERS WITH BETTER CHEMICAL RESISTANCE
In addition to the heat and chemical resistance offered by all Viton fluoroelastomers, the Viton terpolymer family offers excellent processing, rheology, and physical properties, as well as significant improvements for resisting chemical attack.
